Finding the why of our actions
We do a lot of things in our life. Some actions are intentional, some unintentional. But all of them have one thing in common: We do them for a reason.
There may be multiple factors that influence how we act every day. How we react to different situations. How we structure our days and lives.
But in the end it comes down to our values.
Intentional or not, our values guide our actions.
Sometimes we know exactly what our values or, other times we don't.
Sometimes we need to dive deeper to find the true motivation behind a doing, to find our true selves.
To find the why.
There needn't be an answer to that question for every single action we take, but knowing it for some can be crucial.
To know ourselves, to know what makes us happy, to continue doing or stopping it.
The why may shift over time.
I may start to work out every day because I want to look good, but continue it for years because I find joy and satisfaction in getting physical exercise.
I may decide to adopt a vegan diet because I want to have an excuse on why not to eat unhealthy things, but still don't eat animal products years later because I found it to be the best thing I can do for animals and the planet.
A why doesn't need to be perfect. It doesn't need to be linked to the value you're most proud of.
Sometimes it's just about impressing someone, or ourselves. But that's okay.
Just knowing why we do the things we do can help us to shape the life we want to live.
By asking ourselves "Why do I still do this today?" we can find out if we can still identify with the reason we're doing it.
Or if we just continue because when we started our why was there and now we don't want to admit to ourselves that it isn't anymore.
It's not the easiest thing to question our intentions for our important actions. For some it isn't necessary at all. But for others it is.
Sometimes we get caught up in a life we decided to shape that way because of certain reasons some time ago. Sometimes it takes a different view on things to realize that those reasons are not valid anymore.
Changing our lives is not easy. But it's possible.
We have the power in our own hands, only we know what we want our life to look like, and only we know what to do about it.
We just have to find the why, and take actions.
Continue doing things we do for a reason we resonate with. Stop doing things we do for a reason that doesn't feel right to us anymore.
The first step to change always is realization.
Finding our why can be the initiator to start the life we want to.
