Using the past to change the present
The past can be powerful. It can provide us with memories that bring us happiness, memories that keep us going.
Remembering about past experiences and beautiful moments when we felt at our best can make us happy in the now as well.
For me there was a time where a quote from a song stuck in my head all the time:
"These memories are the blood beating under my skin, repeating the same thoughts, again and again" — Linkin Park
Everything I clung to was what I had experienced and how bad I wanted it again. It was all I could think about. It was when I was at my happiest, and I wanted that feeling back. I almost forgot to appreciate the memories I'm making right now.
The past can also be powerful in a different way other than providing us with enjoyable memories.
It can lead us to dwell on it to an extent that influences our lives in a bad way. It can make us feel overwhelmingly sad, angry, or full of regret.
At times it's a good thing to be able to look back at memories we made along our journey through life.
But at other times we can get too caught up in it. In something that isn't that way anymore. In something we would've done differently today.
We have to be careful not to let the past take over our thoughts, feelings, and lives.
The past will always be the past, and that's just that. We can't change anything about it, neither make a moment last longer nor do something differently. Say more. Do more. Appreciate more.
The only thing we can do is change the present. Live in the now, and make the best out of it.
Memories about our past can be precious and there's nothing wrong with reliving them in our heads at times, as long as we don't let us be consumed by them.
As long as we don't forget how to live in the present because we want something that's gone so bad. Or change something about the past to make today different.
We have the power to act, the power to change our lives today. Now is the present, now is the time to make a difference.
What we learned from the past can be of great aid, it can be a guide for us to act in another way today. In a way so we can have a little of what we could have had back then, of what we wanted back then, today.
The power lies in the now. The past can't be changed. We can only learn from it. Realize how it made us the kind of person we are today. Acknowledge what it taught us to do differently next time. Shape our future by acting in the present.
Now is the time to show appreciation to people we didn't show it enough before.
Now is the time to do something we regretted not having done years ago.
Now is the time to be alive.
